Community & Volunteer                                          Dementia Education     As the dementia population increases in this country & especially within this community, we have a great need to help support and educate each other.  Living with and caring for someone with progressive dementia can be an overwhelming task.  Hospice & Palliative Care of the Gunnison Valley is offering a series of classes to give caregivers some practical approaches and hands-on real life situations to overcome some of the many challenges faced as the caregiver for someone with dementia.  These classes will help build a support group for our local dementia community.

This will be a series of five classes, one class per month on the third Monday of each month.  Each class will offer a new topic of discussion as it relates to dementia.  All classes take place at the St. Peter’s Parish Hall at 400 West Georgia in Gunnison from 5-6:30.

Monday, February 15th : Communication

Monday, March 15th : Home Safety

Monday, April 19th : Behaviors

Monday, May 17th : Personal Care

Monday, June 21st : Traveling

Classes will be led by Charla Moneypenny, CNA.  Charla has 30 years of experience caring for people with various stages of dementia.  There will be role playing opportunities at each class.  Role play participation is optional.  A professional caregiver will be available at each class, so bring your loved one along.  These classes are made possible by Hospice and Palliative Care of the Gunnison Valley and a grant from Gunnison County.  RSVP encouraged but not required.  Call 641-4254.
